Outside Fire at Tesla

Updates to follow.  Engine 57 on scene reporting a 30x40 foot area with flames on the southeast corner of the plant near the plastics facility.
Update:  Crews reporting it almost under control with no threat to buildings.  Problem in accessing the area of the fire.  Two hose lines have been pulled (E55 & E57).  Sounds like wooden pallets were on fire.  Now they are saying there may be barrels on fire that have hazardous material in them.  Fire captain says they are having a tough time putting the fire out with two streams of water and will add some foam.
Update: treating this as a chemical fire with the possibility that batteries are on fire.
Update:  10 X 10 foot area of batteries on fire leading to "thermal runaway".
Update 9:12 pm.  Foam and water on fire now making progress.  Fork lift is helping to move things out.  Smoke starting to dissipate.
6 engines and 2 ladder trucks on scene as well as 2 battalion chiefs.
Update:  Using straight water now on the fire.  Per radio traffic, may have to submerge the battery packs in water for a couple of hours to extinguish them.
Update 9:49 pm-  putting the batteries in a dumpster and then adding water.

  1. At least no one was hurt. It’s going to be a long night.

  2. Yeah it started out as a simple wooden pallet fire then escalated to a 10 x 10 foot area of batteries on fire. One fire captain said he thought Tesla wasn't being honest with them by not telling them about the batteries. Fire guys kinda figured it out when they couldn't put the fire out.

  3. Yikes. Hopefully Tesla will be held accountable for not being truthful. A firefighter could have been seriously injured if it would have gotten out of control.
