Marquise McClinton In Jail (Again)

A local felon was pursued this morning and crashed on Mowry causing the road to be closed for an hour or so.  You may recall, this was one of the suspects in the Morrison Canyon burglary a few months back where he was spotted on Vargas Road and finally apprehended on Mission near McDonalds.  Here is a link to today's event from the EBT:

Fremont officers assisted  East Palo Alto police officers in capturing two suspects wanted for a shooting in San Mateo.  After a short pursuit, the suspect vehicle stopped on Thornton across from Dale Hardware and two suspects fled on foot.  The suspects were rounded up in short order.  Apparently no one was injured during the arrest.

Rescue on Mission Peak

Fremont Fire was dispatched to Mission Peak around 6:30 this evening for a medical call.  An hour later the off road crew in 654 asked their dispatcher for coordinates.  No further info as to the nature of the call.  Fire Tac 3 is active on the scanner for this event.  The fire crew has a lock on the coordinates on their iPad and are making way to the victim, who has been in phone contact with 9-1-1 operators.
Update:  at 7:30 the crew has located the patient and are transporting subject down to the parking lot.

Fight at the Red Lobster

This sound fishy, but there is a report of a Red Lobster employee doing donuts in the parking lot in a black Chevy Camaro.  A citizen confronted the driver and was apparently punched.  The employee went back inside the restaurant while the victim waited for officers to arrive.

Men With Their Pants Down

Three reports in the last 24 hours or so of men dropping their drawers.  A man behind the Subway by Raley's dropped his pants and defecated on the ground.  This morning a man in a car in the Irvington district had his pants off and exposing himself to pedestrians.  And around 11 o'clock last night a man was standing on the median on Mowry at Cherry, dropping his pants as cars approached.  Perhaps they were celebrating the winter solstice.  Or maybe they have mental issues....

Police Activity near Decoto and Paseo

Numerous officers are checking a neighborhood north of Decoto and west of the Alameda Creek for a trespasser or possible burglar.  A drone and a K-9 (UCPD) are assisting.

Water Rescue near Dumbarton

Fremont Fire, Redwood City Fire and CHP responding to the Marshlands Road area off of the Dumbarton (Don Edwards) for a rescue.  Rescue boats being dispatched as well.  More as I know more details.
Update:  Apparently a boat with two people on it departed Alviso and was observed to be overturned somewhere south of the Dumbarton Bridge.  While they were searching for it, info became available that the vessel was uprighted and the occupants were no longer in distress.

Bad L.A. Cop

From the L.A. Times:

A Los Angeles Police Department officer accused of fondling a dead woman’s breasts was arrested Thursday and charged, officials said.
David Rojas was taken into custody by the Internal Affairs Division after the district attorney’s office charged the Central Division officer with a felony violation of the state safety codes covering sexual actions with human remains.
Rojas and his partner responded to a call about a possible dead woman in a residential unit, sources said. Once the two officers determined the woman was dead, Rojas’ partner returned to the patrol car to retrieve something. During that time, Rojas turned off his body-worn camera and allegedly fondled the woman’s breasts, LAPD officials said.
Although the officer deactivated the camera, a two-minute buffer on the device captured the incident. The department is also investigating the officer’s work history.
Currently, when an LAPD officer turns his or her camera on, it automatically begins saving video and audio starting two minutes before the activation. It’s unclear for how long the officer allegedly fondled the dead woman or what triggered him to later activate the camera.

Calaveras Deputies Use Deescalation Skills To Save Life

Kudos to Calaveras County Sheriff Deputies for saving a suicide by cop subject:

MEDIA RELEASE
Contact: Sergeant Greg Stark
Release Date: December 10, 2019
Release Time: 10:00 AM

Criminal Threats Arrest

(Burson, CA) On December 7, 2019 at about 9:15PM the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a person who reported that suspect Shane Smith (33 years old of Burson) made a credible threat to kill them. The reporting party informed Sheriff Dispatch that they were in fear of suspect Shane Smith and had fled the residence to a safer location.

Suspect Shane Smith also called 911 requesting deputies respond due to a homicide. Deputies responded to a residence in the 11000 block of Wade Lane in Burson to investigate. Prior to arrival they met with another reporting party who stated the suspect had been drinking (alcoholic beverages) heavily and was upset that his car keys were taken from him to prevent him from driving whil e intoxicated.

Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputies (including K-9) and additional units from the California Highway Patrol responded to the residence to contact the suspect. As they were approaching the residence they observed the suspect walking down the road towards their location. As the suspect approached, deputies noted the suspect appeared to be carrying a firearm in his hand while shouting at the deputies to shoot him. Deputies were able remain calm and used exceptional communication skills to interact with the suspect. Deputies were eventually able to talk the subject in to putting the firearm down however, the suspect remained hostile and continued walking toward them. Deputies continued their de-escalation communication, eventually taking the suspect into custody without incident.

Upon collecting the weapon that was discarded by the suspect for evidence, deputies learned the weapon was actually a pellet gun. The pellet gun had the orange tip concealed or altered thus making it look like a functioning firearm. Upon questioning, the suspect’s original plan was to produce the weapon in attempt to get deputies to fire upon him.

Suspect Shane Smith was charged with 422PC Criminal Threats (Felony), 417(a) (1) pc exhibit deadly weapon not a firearm (Misdemeanor) and 16700(a) (2) (B) Airsoft without orange ring or trigger guard (Misdemeanor). He is being held in the Calaveras County jail with a $50,000 bail. No further information is available at this time.

120 MPH Pursuit Down 680

Fremont officers chased a stolen car down 680 into Milpitas early this morning at speeds of up to 120 mph.  The event started at 2:48 this morning when a license plate reader at Washington and Fremont picked up a stolen white 2009 Toyota Camry.  A broadcast was made to patrol officers and a few minutes later an officer observed it at the Shell Station on Fremont at Eugene.  The car fled from the officer and the chase was on..south on Fremont to Washington then onto 680 south.  The patrol vehicles were unable to keep up with the powerful engine of the Camry :) and they lost it around Calaveras Road in Milpitas.

Sideshow Activity

A large sideshow with 200-300 cars is in progress at the south end of Fremont Blvd.  An officer nearby has heard gunshots.  Officers will form up before moving in.  An hour earlier a large group, probably the same group, was at Union Landing in U.C.  They left there without incident.
Update:  vehicles are now leaving north of Fremont Blvd, apparently hearing sirens from arriving units, per an officer observing.

Police Activity in U.C.; Suspect With AK-47 Arrested

UCPD officers are looking for a male that ran from the Motel 6 in U.C. around 11 this morning.  The want is unknown, but he was last seen jumping from the second floor balcony,  and checking his waistband as he ran.  The Motel 6 has been advised to lock down their guests and nearby business are being told via phone about the wanted subject.  Fremont PD has sent a drone crew and HPD has sent several officers to assist.  The Motel 6 is located on Industrial off of Whipple.
At 11:22 an officer has a man in the alley behind the Motel 6 that is "non compliant".  Numerous officers rolling in.  He is now compliant and proned out. Subject in custody.

*******

This event began around 10:52 when a person reported a man parked in a car in the Decoto district with an assault weapon on his lap.  A description of the vehicle was given out and a few minutes later a canine officer spotted the vehicle a few block away and followed it onto westbound Whipple.  Other officers joined in before an enforcement stop was initiated.  The car failed to yield to the red light and accelerated westbound at a speed of 70 mph.  The vehicle then stopped or crashed near the Motel 6 and the subject ran into the motel parking lot.  The canine officer located an "AK" on the driver's floorboard of the suspect car.  After a search of 20 minutes or so, the suspect was located in an alley behind the Motel 6 and taken into custody, but will be transported to a hospital for unknown injuries.  This may be the break UCPD is looking for to solve recent shootings involving bullets used from AK-47 style weapons.

Update:  listening to the ambulance call the hospital "en route with an 18 year old male in police custody...jumped off a 20 foot wall, landed on his right flank on some rocks.  No head injury."

Sergeant Axes Construction Noise Complaint

At around 9:30 on this Sunday morning, officers were dispatched to check a complaint of construction noise at the YMCA on Blacow off of Grimmer.  The reporting party said a tractor was working in the children's play area creating a lot of noise.  Construction on Sundays within 500 feet of any home is not authorized in Fremont per COF website:

"Construction Within 500 Feet of Residential, Lodging, or Hospitals Weekday hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the Saturday or holiday hours of 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., while Sunday construction is not allowed. "

A sergeant inquired if the reporting party was anonymous and the dispatcher answered in the affirmative.  He then said to cancel the call.  Perhaps too many people have complained about construction noise in the city over the last few years and the PD doesn't want to get involved.  But aren't we all tired of the construction and screwed up roads and don't we look forward to being able to sleep in or attend church on Sunday with out hearing a lot of banging and commotion?  FPD should take these complaints more seriously.

Fight at Bronco Billy's

What a great name for a movie:  Fight at Bronco Billy's.  Four men were reported to be in a fist fight on Niles Blvd in front of Bronco Billy's Pizza at around 2 this morning.  The subjects left prior to officers arriving.

Two Homicides in Hayward (Updated)

There were shots fired in Hayward this afternoon on Santa Clara Street.  No details on the victim, if there is one.  At least two shell casings were found outside a residence, possibly in the street, but I don't know if anyone was struck.  According to Pulse Point, Hayward Fire did not have any medical calls in the area.

Fun Fremont Fact

While doing some online shopping this morning, I did not notice until after the transaction was complete, that in my mailing address the state of New York was selected.  The zip code was correct.  My initial thought was, "well, there can't possibly be a Fremont, New York and they'll use the zip anyway." I knew of a Fremont, Nebraska, but none on the east coast.  But I thought I would check, being curious.  And wouldn't you know, there is a Fremont NY!  That guy really got around.

From http://fremontnewyork.us/

The town was named in the honor of General John C. Fremont.
He was among the few men who had helped organize the new town and was admired
by many. Fremont, NY became the eleventh municipality. Lands in the township
were the last to be rendered for settlement.

Police Activity at CVS on Driscoll

There is an apparent assault victim in the parking lot of the CVS on Driscoll.  He told dispatchers that he was hit in the head.  Earlier this evening there was an assault victim at CJ Liquors on Stevenson near Blacow.  That victim, who was down on the ground for several minutes before help arrived, was transported to a trauma center.

Another Rainy Friday Night; Another Serious Hit and Run

An injury hit and run accident occurred around 6:45 this evening on Argonaut behind Michael's at the Fremont Hub.  The suspect vehicle was described as a white SUV, last seen northbound towards Walnut.  One week ago, also on a dark rainy night, a pedestrian was struck on Niles Blvd and killed by a hit and run driver.  An occupant of the vehicle was taken to a trauma center, but the extent of the injuries are not known.

Goodyear Blimp Over Fremont

The Goodyear Blimp, N3A, was spotted flying south along 680 at 2,700 feet at 3:30 this afternoon.  From internet data, the blimp departed Livermore airport.  The blimp is probably en route to the football stadium in Santa Clara to provide low altitude video for the college football game tonight.  Go Ducks!

Gun Call in Irvington

Around 1 o'clock this afternoon a citizen reported a man on a bicycle crossing the street in the Irvington district with a gun tucked in his waistband.  The party was over at Monument Park, near 5 Corners.  6J1, a school resource officer, located two subjects near the post office and eventually caught up with them near Irvington.  He held the two at gun point until backup officers arrived.  One subject said he had two guns on him.  Both were detained without incident.  Unknown how many guns in total were taken.

Five Shootings in 30 Days; Fremont and U.C.

There have been at least five shootings in Fremont and Union City combined in the past 30 days.
November 4-  A man shoots a woman reportedly with a shotgun.  She survives and he is later arrested.
November 20-  Two men sitting in a car in U.C. are shot.  They survive and the suspect is outstanding.
November 23-  Two boys shot and killed as they sit in a van in the wee hours of the night in Union City.  Suspect is outstanding.
November 28-  A man shoots into the air with a handgun from the parking lot of the Target at the Fremont Hub.  No one is struck.  The suspect is arrested.
December 3-  A woman is shot in the leg by an acquaintance in a vehicle and is dropped off at the 7-Eleven in Niles.  The suspect, as of this writing, is outstanding.  Her status is unknown but should survive based on preliminary info.

The shooting of the women were done by acquaintances and apparently targeted.  From police statements, it is unknown if the two U.C. shootings were random or not.  The shooting at Target seemed to be done to scare security officers and not aimed at any persons.  There may be other shootings that have not been acknowledged by either agency.  No official word has come from FPD on the November 4th Cloverleaf bowl shooting or the October 14th stabbing of four people in Irvington.

Gun Shot Victim at 7-Eleven Niles

Officers and paramedics are off with a female gunshot victim at the 7-Eleven in Niles.  Apparently the victim was shot in the leg while traveling with a friend in his car.  A tourniquet has been applied to her leg, per radio traffic from an officer on scene.  The driver has left the scene.
Update:  Officers are calling this a 245PC, assault with a deadly weapon, not an accidental discharge.  The suspect and his vehicle are known and officers are actively looking for him now.

Fatal Hit and Run Suspect Vehicle

See FPD Nixle page for pictures of the suspect vehicle.  Here is the text:

Vehicle in fatal hit and run collision believed to be a 1997-99 Buick LeSabre, investigators still need help to locate & ID.
On Friday evening, November 29, 2019, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Fremont Police Traffic officers responded to the intersection of Niles Blvd and Rock Ave regarding a fatal hit and run collision. Upon arrival, officers discovered Fremont resident, Suzanne Ogi, 72 and her dog Molly, had been struck and killed while crossing Niles Blvd. in the marked cross walk.
Witnesses at the scene told officers that the driver had stopped and checked on the pedestrian however, he returned to his vehicle and fled the scene northbound on Niles Blvd towards Union City. The driver was described as a slender white male in his 50s, with grey hair, glasses and wearing a lighter colored fleece jacket. The suspect vehicle was described as an older light colored sedan.
Based on evidence, officers believe the vehicle is a light colored 1997-1999 Buick LeSabre.  In-car camera footage from Fremont police vehicles that had been in the area for the Niles Festival of Lights Parade were analyzed.  Video of the suspect vehicle was recovered from the units stationed at SR 238 (Mission Blvd) and Nursey Ave. The Buick LeSabre was recorded driving northbound on SR 238 before making a left westbound turn onto Nursey Ave just before the collision occurred.  Unfortunately the quality of the video has not been sufficient for us to determine the license plate.
The included pictures are of the suspect vehicle from our in-car cameras and then a sample photo of a 1997-1999 Buick LeSabre. The suspect vehicle has front end damage.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to please call the Fremont Police Department’s Traffic Unit at 510-790-6800 x3, or send an anonymous tip by texting TIP FREMONTPD followed by your message to 888-777, or via the web at https://local.nixle.com/tip/alert/6216337.

Belt Beater Man

A strange call.  A man was out of his car on Eggers near Fremont Blvd around 12:45 this afternoon and beating a car nearby with a belt.  Dispatchers received several calls on this.  At least one person followed the man's gray Jeep Compass south on Fremont Blvd.  Officers were able to intercept it on Walnut.  Ironically enough, the suspects pulls into the courthouse parking lot.  Officers were able to detain him there.  A check of his license plate revealed a similar incident of the belt beating here in Fremont.  Hopefully when he sees the judge on his next visit he will leave his belt at home.

Police Activity on Scott Creek

There is a huge search taking place in an industrial/business area off Scott Creek west of Warm Springs.  Numerous midnight and day shift officers, along with detectives, K-9 officers and drone operators are on scene. At this time the object of their search or reason for it is unknown.  More later...
At 7:53 the search was called off apparently with negative results.  There is talk about a stolen truck out of Gilroy...apparently looking for an auto theft suspect.
Update:  This event started at 5:58 when an employee from Gilroy stated he was tracking their stolen 20 foot Freightliner box truck to a location on Auto Mall.  At 6:06 Z90 picked it up on 680 and followed it west on Scott Creek, passing Warm Springs and then onto Kato Terrace.  From there the suspect backed the vehicle into a parking spot in a nearby business lot and fled on foot.  Officers gave chase and eventually set up the large perimeter that lasted for over 90 minutes.

Fatal Hit and Run on Niles Blvd Last Night

Here is FPD's Nixle message:

This evening at ‪8:28 p.m.‬, the Fremont PD Dispatch Center received a call, reporting that an unconscious woman was lying in the roadway at the intersection of Niles Bl and Linda Dr.  Traffic officers working the Niles Holiday Parade were a short distance away and immediately responded.

When officers arrived, they spoke to a witness who stated the female pedestrian was crossing at the intersection in the crosswalk with her dog, when a vehicle traveling northbound on Niles Blvd struck them.  The driver of the vehicle stopped and walked over to the pedestrian.  The driver then returned to his vehicle and drove away.

Fremont Fire and paramedics arrived, but sadly the woman succumbed to her injuries.  The dog she was walking also died at the scene.

The driver is described as a white male (unknown age).  The vehicle was described as a light colored 4-door sedan.  The driver was last seen driving northbound on Niles Blvd towards Union City.  Responding Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the suspect.  The vehicle likely has front end damage.

The pedestrian is a woman who appears to be in her 50’s.  The Alameda County Coroner has been notified and they will respond to identify the woman and make family/next of kin notifications.

We will be on-scene conducting our investigation for the next couple of hours. Northbound Niles Blvd. is closed between Rock Ave and Linda Dr.

Anyone with information is asked to please contact Fremont Police Dispatch at 510-790-6800 x 3 or email Investigator Brian Burch at Bburch@fremont.gov.  We will also accept anonymous tips.  Text Tip FremontPD followed by a short message to 888-777.

Probation Search in U.C.

Fremont officers, and possibly those from UCPD, searched a Union City residence this afternoon.  The home is located just a few blocks from Searles Elementary School.

Timeline of Shots Fired Call at Target

From what people were telling the dispatchers, it sounded like a mass shooting had gone down at the Target at the Fremont Hub Thursday night.  Customers inside were hiding and calling 9-1-1 after hearing shots being fired, not knowing that they were being shot from outside.  Here is how it went down on the radio:

11:38  Call dispatched "10-71 (shooting) at Target at The Hub.  We are getting multiple callers of shots fired inside the store."  3 officers were dispatched, but many many more officers rolled on this.
11:39  A sergeant asks that Fremont Fire roll and stage, thinking that there may be multiple gun shot victims in the store.
11:40:30  First officer arrives,  90 seconds after the call came out.
11:40:50  The officer advises that no one was hit.  Shots were fired in the air.  A silver Jetta just took off.
11:41:45 (Less than 3 minutes after the call came out)  Unit 1A3, a midnight zone 1 patrol officer, sees the suspect vehicle, "I've got the vehicle.  Northbound on Glenview.  I'm in pursuit..silver Passat."
11:43:30  1A3 advises they are going into Newark on Central Avenue.
11:43:45  1A3 transmits two cryptic messages "foot bail" and "one at gun point".  Two other officers had joined in the pursuit prior to this and all 3 are rounding up the five suspects.  No injuries reported.Image result for vw passat

Scanning the East Bay This Morning

I have the scanner set to monitor the following departments this morning:  Fremont, Hayward, Newark and Union City.

SHOTS FIRED AT TARGET ON BLACK FRIDAY; 5 ARRESTED

A shot (or shots) was fired in the parking lot of the Target at The Hub around 11:30 this evening.  An alert officer spotted the suspect vehicle, a VW, on Glenview and gave chase.  West on Eggers they went, and then north on Blacow before turning west on Central into Newark.  Shortly thereafter the vehicle turned north and either stopped or crashed.  Fremont officers quickly took five people into custody and located a gun.  The event started when security officers at the store attempted to stop the suspects from stealing a Play Station PS4.  As they exited the store, the suspects shot at least one round into the air and fled in the VW.

Was An Assault Rifle Used in Both U.C. Shootings?

Officers have reported finding 7.62 caliber rifle casings at the scene of both recent U.C. shootings. The AK-47 and similar assault rifles use this ammo.  In the latter shooting, involving the boys, 10 to 11 7.62 casings were found at the scene per radio traffic.  At the scene of the first shooting on November 20th, where two men were shot in their parked car, one 7.62X39 casing was found.  The officer speculated that there may have been a mix of rifles and handguns used, but only one casing was reported located.  Detectives may be able to tell from the casings if the same model weapon was used at both crime scenes.

Police Activity at Fremont and Decoto (Again)

You may recall an event last week where a man was on the roof of the 7-Eleven and the ReMax office building next door.  Now FFD is there putting out a fire behind the building (typical transient stuff burning).  In fact a transient has been spotted by a fire captain and has called for a police response.

On Pawnee Court, an apparently disoriented man has walked into a house that is not his, claiming that he lived there.  He has since left and numerous neighbors have called in about the man.  Several officers are on the way.

Crash on 680 North at Sheridan; Another Ugly Commute

A motorcycle is down on 680 north near Sheridan road on this Thanksgiving week get away Friday afternoon.  CHP reports minor injuries to the down rider.  He may have gone down after bumping two cars (lane splitting?).  Traffic is slow from Auto Mall north, and 880 is slow as well from the prior Tesla crash.  Fremont residents can anticipate crowded streets again on this busy Friday as commuters and vacationers search for alternate routes out of the south bay.
Update at 4:45  A motor officer has shut down Morrison Canyon Road at the base of the hill.  Apparently there is a bottle neck of traffic half way up.  The City needs to get serious about this closure.
At 5:15 a motor officer has taken control of the intersection at Mission and Niles and is allowing northbound traffic on Mission to flow.  Presently it is backed up beyond Walnut.

Tesla Flips Over on 880; Lands on Roof

A gray Tesla has flipped over on northbound 880 at the Alvarado-Niles exit, landing on it's roof on the right hand shoulder.  The fire captain on scene reporting that no one was trapped in the car and that one ambulance is required.  According to CHP dispatch files, the Tesla may have bumped the tire of a big rig trailer and lost control.  Two fire crews and CHP remain on scene at this accident which occurred just before 3 this afternoon.

Another Day, Another Pursuit

A man had his new 2020 Mercedes SUV stolen in San Jose this morning and followed it via a tracking device to Fremont.  He kept dispatchers updated on the location of the vehicle and eventually an officer spotted it on Decoto near 880.  A pursuit was initiated in Newark, and after a few minutes of driving the streets of Newark of speeds up to 90 mph, the vehicle crashed at the north end of Peachtree Avenue  The driver, the only occupant, fled on foot.  About an hour later, at around 12:20, the subject was located in a backyard on Beutke Court and taken into custody.

Fire at Five Corners

There is a fire at the  former Casa Robles restaurant on Washington at Roberts.  The fire seems to be isolated in the electrical box per fire company on scene.  The building is bordered up.  Fire captain reporting that the fire is out and other fire companies are being released.

Attempted Murder in U.C.

Below is a UCPD Nixle message sent out this afternoon about a serious event that occurred early this morning.  Unlike FPD, UCPD seems to have a commitment to provide timely information to their community about serious crimes.

Union City PD investigating a double shooting near 8th and C Streets on 11/20/19

Union City Police Department is investigating a double shooting that occurred early this morning.

On 11/20/19, around 00:30 hours, two victims parked their vehicle near 8th and C Streets in Union City.  Shortly after parking, a suspect vehicle pulled up along side of the victims and opened fire.

One of the victims was shot in the back and the other was shot in the leg.  Both victims were transported to a local hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.  The victims are both adults and Union City residents.

Union City Police Department is investigating this incident as an attempted murder case and we are seeking information from the community.

Anyone with information about this incident should contact Detective Jensen at 510-675-5216 or by e-mail at Scottj@unioncity.org.

Man Walks Into Seneca Park Home

Around noon today a homeowner on Seneca Park Drive reported that a man had walked into her home, sat down on the couch and said he was waiting for the police.  A few minutes later the police did in fact arrive and arrested him apparently without incident quickly.  The man in his 40s may have been mentally ill.
Earlier today, in the north part of town, there was a report of a man taking mail from the mailboxes on the street.  The reporting party thought he may have been mentally ill as he was drooling.

At least a half a million dollars worth of Teslas parked illegally and unattended near the Motel 6 in Warm Springs.  The driver is probably grabbing some winks before making the deliveries.

Foot Search For Auto Burglary Suspect

An alert officer, 3X9, observed an auto burglary go down at Pacific Commons and followed the suspect vehicle onto 880 north.  The suspect vehicle has been reported as stolen.  The pursuit ended just north of Stevenson when the suspect stopped his vehicle and then ran across the freeway to the Newark side.  Numerous officers are in the area of 880 and the car dealerships on the Newark side.  There is only one suspect.
Update at noon:  A suspect has been taken into custody.  The suspect was hiding in a trash can near the Mazda dealership.  He is a San Francisco man and S.F. is where the car was stolen from.

Shooting at Cloverleaf Bowl November 4th

I finally have pieced these shooting arrests together.  All previous posts on this event will be deleted.  It appears that Mr. Chauncey Jones is not being charged and is not longer in an Alameda County jail.  Here is what I know-  Around 3:17 a.m. on Monday November 4th a woman was shot in the ankle in the parking lot of the Cloverleaf Bowl.  Witnesses described the suspect as shooting a shotgun from the back seat of a Honda sedan and leaving the area.  The victim sustained minor pellet wounds to one of her ankles, according to initial reports,  and transported to a trauma center.  The suspect, Mr. Leonard Brewer, was arrested last week and booked into Santa Rita jail for a variety of felonies, the most serious is Attempted Murder (664,187 PC).  He is scheduled back into court on November 27th for a pretrial hearing after apparently pleading not guilty in court today.

Police Activity in Centerville

You may have noticed a large police presence on Fremont Blvd in the Centerville area.  Officers are looking for a missing juvenile.  A k-9 and a drone are being used to assist.  The search seems to be centered between the Hub and Thornton Avenue.  I believe a Nixle message is being created.
Update.  At 7:30 an officer located the juvenile on Fremont Blvd. and he appears OK.

FPD Releases Info on Car Jacking; 3 More To Go

For those of you that do not receive Nixle messages, FPD has released info on the Dick's Sporting Goods car jacking reported here last Wednesday.

On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, at 2:08 p.m., patrol officers were dispatched to Dick’s Sporting Goods in Pacific Commons on the report of an in-progress theft.  Employees called dispatch as they were watching three individuals, two men and a woman, tamper with security sensors in the footwear department.  The first patrol officer entered the store and attempted to stay out of sight while waiting for additional officers to arrive. The officer immediately observed two of the suspects at the front counter.  A third suspect, later identified as 33 year old Joseph Fuimaono (Hayward resident), was observed walking towards the back of the store carrying a black and green backpack.  Believing he was about to leave through an emergency exit, the officer got back in his patrol car and drove around to the side of the store.

After walking towards the back of the store, Fuimaono came back to the counter area and walked out the front doors.  Arriving patrol officers saw Fuimaono as he exited.  Fuimaono tried to avoid officers as he walked between cars in the parking lot.  He then entered into the driver’s seat of a parked Acura sedan.  Officers could see the passenger seat was occupied by a man and observed a physical confrontation taking place inside the vehicle.  Officers approached the car and Fuimaono suddenly accelerated over the parking lot median and out onto the sidewalk.  Having just witnessed a car-jacking/kidnapping, officers pursued the vehicle.  As the vehicle slowed down to make a right turn onto Automall Parkway, the victim passenger managed to jump out.

Officers continued to pursue the vehicle for approximately 2 miles, but ultimately ended the pursuit, when Fuimaono began driving the wrong way. The victim’s iPhone, still in the car, assisted officers in tracking the vehicle through Fremont neighborhoods. They eventually found the phone in the middle of the roadway in the Sundale neighborhood and the Acura abandoned on Sundale Dr. near Sutter Dr.

A K9 tracking team led a search in the area, but Fuimaono was not found.  Based on witness accounts, it was believed Fuimaono had been picked up by an unknown person shortly after he abandoned the car.  The two suspects at Dick’s Sporting Goods were detained and arrested.

As the search continued, officers learned Fuimaono had two active felony warrants for weapons violations and felony DUI. Through investigative channels, officers eventually confirmed Fuimaono had made it to a residence in Oakland.  Oakland Police responded at our request and arrested Fuimaono without incident.

During a search of the women’s restroom at Dick’s Sporting Goods, the black and green backpack that had been worn by Fuimaono was found. The backpack contained a loaded AK 47, a loaded AR 15, a hood and gloves.

Arrests:
Lisa Saefong (Richmond resident), 28 years old, arrested for burglary and vehicle theft
David Correa (Transient), 27 years old, arrested for identity theft, vehicle theft, possession of stolen property and three additional warrants.

Joseph Fuimaono, 33 years old, arrested for car-jacking, kidnapping during a carjacking and evading a police officer/driving without due regard of public safety.

We’d like to thank the Oakland Police Department for their assistance.

Another Ugly Commute, And It's Only Monday

A traffic accident on north 680 in the Sunol area at 2 this afternoon has 680 at a crawl from Auto Mall north.  Mission Blvd is at a crawl as well from 680 to Niles Canyon as commuters look for alternate routes.   CHP reports that as of 2:43 all lanes are open.

The retail shops in the new "Downtown Fremont" shopping area are either vacant or under construction.  I saw no signs advertising coming retailers.  Is there too much retail in Fremont already?

Officers Struggle With Man at Centerville Library

The call was routine for a weekday morning:  a homeless person was sleeping in front of the entrance to the Centerville Library and would not move.  Two officers arrived and soon were struggling with him.  A broadcast for code 3 cover was put out.  Before cover units arrived, the man was pinned to the ground and had stopped resisting, but officers would wait for a 3 unit to arrive before attempting to put him in a patrol car.  Two additional officers have arrived and the man has been placed in cuffs, but will need to put in a WRAP.   Monday morning is starting out as a busy one in containing the transient population.

Fremont and Sundale This Morning

Just before the sun was to rise in the eastern sky, a woman with "mental health issues" starting throwing food on passengers on an AC Transit bus.  The bus driver stopped on Fremont at Sundale.  The woman exited and then started to removed the windshield wipers from the bus.  Last I heard she was on the way to Santa Rita.
An hour later a transient pushing a wheel chair was chasing a citizen at the 7-Eleven, also on Fremont at Sundale.  Officers are on the way.

Dispatcher's Lack of Clear Communication

An FPD dispatcher failed to communicate clearly the time of a ping from a stolen iPhone, resulting in a wild goose chase by at least one officer.  Taken in the Costco robbery (see post below) was an iPhone.  Officers had the dispatcher ask the phone carrier for a location ping.  The dispatcher relayed the info, saying the ping was before the phone was turned off at midnight 28 hours, universal time.  To ham radio operators and military people, this would put the time at 4:28 p.m. PST, before the robbery.  To the officers in the field, this may not have made any sense not knowing what "universal time" is, so they operated as if this was current info.  17 minutes later...as officers checked the area and the victim's home, an officer inquired about the currency of the info.  Now the dispatcher said it was before the robbery, "a couple of hours ago".  This would have been helpful to the officers in the field to know on the initial broadcast.  A simple "no pings since 4:28" would have been all that was needed to say.

Robbery at Costco

A woman was robbed of her purse in the parking lot of Costco at around 5 o'clock this afternoon.  One of the two suspects had a black handgun.  Suspect vehicle is a black 2006 Infinity 4 door.  At 5:03 one of the LPR cameras spotted it eastbound on Auto Mall out of the Pacific Commons area.  The vehicle is registered in Oakland.

To the best of my knowledge FPD has not released any details of the above incidents even though all of them are of significant interest to the community.

FPD Pursuit Stats

The following info is taken from blog posts since July 20th.  These are of pursuits that I was aware of as a part time observer,  but obviously there have been many more with most of them unreported by FPD.  In fact, in the last four months there have been only three (3) Patrol Blotters published (July 25, Sept 22 and Oct 12).

During the past four months, I have chronicled 12 high speed pursuits through the streets of Fremont and/or on neighboring freeways.  Of those, 1 resulted in fatal injuries.  Two pursuits were completed without injuries that resulted in the arrest of four suspects.   Of the 10 other pursuits, 4 resulted in suspects being injured and  arrested and 6 were terminated prior to the suspect vehicle being stopped.  The one fatality and 9 of the 12 injured from these pursuits were suspects and/or passengers in the suspect vehicle.  Only three citizens were injured, with at least one of which was of major injuries.  So, in summary, there were 12 pursuits that killed one suspect and injured 6 other suspects.  3 citizens were injured from these pursuits.  2 pursuits ended safely with 4 people being arrested.

Again, these are unofficial stats from my observations.

Pursuit Down Fremont Blvd Leads to Injury Crash

If you are a follower of this blog, you knew it was only a matter of time before a Fremont Police pursuit ended with injuries.  Around 7:45 this evening Fremont officers chased a vehicle south on Fremont Blvd from Mowry and it crashed at Stevenson.  The female suspect was wanted for property crimes:  forgery, theft, burglary.   Prior to the crash, the suspect, driving a black 2002 Mercedes, blew through two red lights.  Two ambulances have been requested.  One party is complaining of chest pains.  One party may be trapped.  The suspect is in custody and is being transported to a hospital.    Fremont Fire responded two engines and a ladder truck to the scene.
The lead pursuit unit was 2-O-6.  The traffic on this Saturday night on Fremont Blvd was reported by the officer as "moderate", as you would expect.  But with the suspect blowing the red at Walnut and Bidwell, did the officer really think the suspect and following patrol vehicles would safely make it through the busy intersection ahead at Stevenson?  FPD command staff need to review their pursuit policy regarding the chasing of property crime suspects on city streets where the probability of an injury crash is high.

Armed Robbery in San Lorenzo

An armed man has robbed a loan business in San Lorenzo this morning and left with over $4,000, per a broadcast from the Alameda County Sheriff.  Fremont officers are staking out freeway ramps for the suspect vehicle.  The man was armed with a silver handgun.

Car Jacking at Pacific Commons

The suspect vehicle may be in the Sundale/Logan area via Find My app.  Officers are flooding the area.  More details later....an officer has found the victim's iPhone in the middle of the street.  The suspect must have tossed the phone out the window.
The car jacked vehicle is a black Acura TL 4 door  and was last seen east on Auto Mall going over 880.  There was a passenger in the vehicle at the time of the jacking and he was able to escape a block or so later by jumping out of the vehicle, per radio reports.  The suspect had no weapons, but used his hands as force/threat.
Update:  the vehicle has been located and a K-9 is working the Sundale area looking for the suspect.

This event started at Dick's Sporting Goods at Pacific Commons at around 2:20 p.m.  The suspect and a woman were acting suspiciously inside of Dick's.  Officers had the woman stopped but the man got away.  An officer, 3X7, then observed the male suspect outside car jacking the Acura and gave chase, before losing it over 880.

Update:  Sounds like OPD has picked up the suspect.  Fremont detectives are en route to OPD for a prisoner pick up at this time (7:40 pm.)
