An FPD dispatcher failed to communicate clearly the time of a ping from a stolen iPhone, resulting in a wild goose chase by at least one officer. Taken in the Costco robbery (see post below) was an iPhone. Officers had the dispatcher ask the phone carrier for a location ping. The dispatcher relayed the info, saying the ping was before the phone was turned off at midnight 28 hours, universal time. To ham radio operators and military people, this would put the time at 4:28 p.m. PST, before the robbery. To the officers in the field, this may not have made any sense not knowing what "universal time" is, so they operated as if this was current info. 17 minutes later...as officers checked the area and the victim's home, an officer inquired about the currency of the info. Now the dispatcher said it was before the robbery, "a couple of hours ago". This would have been helpful to the officers in the field to know on the initial broadcast. A simple "no pings since 4:28" would have been all that was needed to say.
