Crazy Man With Rocks on the Loose in Irvington

Several people have called in about a man throwing rocks at the windshield of parked vehicles.  Sounds like 3 victims so far.  Last seen on Thurston.

Woman With a Meat Cleaver

Officers are arriving now at a residence where three sisters are residing.  One of them has a meat cleaver that she is using in a threatening manner.  Updates to follow.
Officers are talking to the meat cleaver wielding woman.  They have now put out a code 4.  All people involved are accounted for and are ok.

Another Problem Child at Safeway

Officers are on the way to Safeway at The Hub (again).  The manager is reporting a male acting up inside the store, yelling and throwing chairs.

Fun Fremont Fact

On this day (May 29) 1909 (110 years ago!) the first steam powered passenger train pulled into the Centerville Depot.  Here is a story about it from the Centerville Walking Tour website:

Centerville Train Depot & Bill Ball Plaza -Also known as Centerville Civic Plaza. Bill Ball was Fremont Mayor from1989 to 1994. The first building at this location was the Horner Schoolhouse, built in 1850. It was later moved to Irvington. Next was the United States Hotel. This was later moved a mile south on Fremont Blvd.. The first passenger train arrival in Centerville on May 29, 1909. The station was a boxcar and many complaints were registered by the local residents. In September, 1910, the Centerville Train Depot was built. The depot serviced Centerville with multiple trains per day. The last passenger service was on March 29, 1940, and the depot was used strictly for freight. On September 30, 1961, the Southern Pacific railroad retired the depot, and it was used to house a number of stores. By 1991, the depot was empty and showing its age. On June 4, 1993, train service returned to Fremont. In December 1993, the City of Fremont acquired the depot and started restoration of the building, putting it back into use as depot for passenger service. The depot was move from the south side of the tracks to the north side to service passengers. In 1910, the firstCenterville Library opens in a building located onMain Street, just to the south of the train station. It moved out of that building in 1923

Rude People at Safeway

A security officer at the Safeway at The Hub has called FPD to report 4 or 5 transient type people
hanging out by the door and being rude to people.  Two of Fremont's finest are on the way.

FPD's Silence

Ten days is a long time to hold facts from the public, even by Fremont PD's standards.  Will we ever know what happened to Thad on the eve of May 19th outside of Devout Coffee in Niles?  Certainly by now the detectives have made an arrest or are about to.  Thad was known to hang out at the Florence.  He lived nearby.  Someone must have known what went down.  If the person who brutally assaulted him is not known, perhaps the general public should be aware.  Peds hit by a car crossing a street get plenty of attention from the PIO.  But someone who dies after being beat up in a public place is not worthy?  Chief Petersen....time to tell your detectives to release some details.

Deputies Save Cardiac Patient at OAK Airport

A tweet worth repeating....

LIFE SAVERS! About 2:30pm, this afternoon, a man went into cardiac arrest at Terminal 2 @IFlyOAKland. These fast acting deputies began CPR and administered an AED device. They were able to save his life! We couldn’t be more proud of their quick action and training.

Reckless Motorcyle Driver on Niles Blvd

Officers are on the way to Niles to check a report of a reckless motorcycle operating up and down Niles Blvd.  The driver is reported to be driving fast and popping wheelies.  Kids in the area are cheering him on.

Rescue Up Mill Creek Road; Vehicle Into Tree

A vehicle has crashed into a tree off of Mill Creek Road this afternoon.  The occupant is unconscious but breathing.  Numerous firefighters are on scene.  Just in...the female occupant is out of the car and on a back board.  Fire personnel will lift her out of the creek bed and up to the road.  An ambulance is staged further down Mill Creek as the road is narrow where the rescue is taking place.  FFD was dispatched at 7:08 this evening but it is unknown if the accident just occurred or was just found.  Two engine companies and a truck company are on scene as well as the battalion chief.
Update:  Vehicle involved is a 2015 Honda and the injured occupant will be taken to a trauma center in San Jose.

Fight at the Senior Center

Four males and one female were ganging up on a male shortly after 4 this afternoon outside the Senior Center at Central Park.  They were reported to be yelling and shoving the lone male and appeared to be drunk.  The first officer arrived eight minutes after being dispatched and quickly had two people detained, but a third fled towards the Boathouse parking lot.  An incoming officer was quickly able to corral that person.  At least one other officer arrived to assist as well.  There was no request for medical aid and it's unknown if any arrests were made.

Fun Fremont Fact

The Spot.  A bar and campground in Niles Canyon about 3.5 miles in from Mission Blvd.  I know where it used to be, but I wasn't around Fremont when it was there.  Some say the bar was a biker bar.  But all agree there also were campgrounds along Alameda Creek there.  There is not much on the internet.  I was not able to find out when it was built, but apparently it closed in the 90s.  Here is what  I found:

The Spot The Spot was a bar and campground on the banks of Alameda Creek separated from Niles Canyon Road by a line of Eucalyptus trees. The land was owned by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, who has owned the water rights along Alameda Creek for over 100 years. In 1994, The Spot was closed as the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission did not extend the lease on the property. The Spot was located at 3 miles into the canyon.

Bruce at WTH

Our friend Bruce showed up at Washington Hospital last night.  He was treated and released but refused to go.  Two officers were dispatched.  Been awhile since I have heard Bruce's name on the radio, but he is still around and still drunk.

VW Crashes Into Yard; Driver Tased

The officer called for code 3 cover.  In the background of the radio call a male could be heard screaming.  A minute later one of two cover officers arrived.  The radio remained silent for many seconds.  Then a request to roll the paramedics- taser deployed.  And  3 other people there  need to be separated.  This all began around 7:27 p.m. when a red VW crashed into the yard of a residence on Tyler Court and struck a wall.  The caller to FPD said the driver was out of the car but very angry and acting weird.  He'll get an ER visit and perhaps a night in jail.
Update:  per hospital radio traffic this is a 35 year old male that was tased with two probes.  Inbound code 2 (not an emergency) with stable vitals.

Structure Fire on Stevenson Place

Fremont Fire companies are on scene of a fire in an office complex on Stevenson Place across the street from Fire Station 9.  There are four engines and two trucks on scene.  Fire crews have just located the source of the smoke which is in suite 212.  Most of the complex is unattended, but a few suites had people in them.

Fremont Police Social Media Priority

It has been almost one week since a life was lost outside of a bar in Niles on a dark Sunday evening. FPD has acknowledged the homicide with a few details buried in their Police Patrol Blotter published May 23rd, nearly 4 days after the crime. As of this writing they have not issued one Nixle message or tweet solely about this crime. But we did get this:
#HappeningNow we are at the @BurgerNBrewFest! Stop by and say 👋.

Cell Phone Robber Caught!

A woman had her cell phone taken by a man around 12:10 this afternoon at the Northgate Savoy Apartments on the north end of town.  Numerous officers surrounded the area.  A detailed description of the suspect was provided by a number of witnesses, and an alert officer located the suspect on a nearby street off of Darwin.

Last Day to Watch Bombers

The historic WW II bombers that have been flying over Fremont this week will move to Livermore tomorrow.  Today is the last day that they will be flying out of Moffett.  Enjoy watching them while you can!

Dialing India

Fremont dispatchers often receive 9-1-1 calls from people intending to call India.  One occurred last night from a homeowner.  Here is what  I found out about calling India from America:

To call India from the U.S., just follow these simple dialing directions:
  1. First dial 011, the U.S. exit code.
  2. Next dial 91, the country code for India.
  3. Then dial the area code (2–4 digits — please see a sample calling code list below) and finally the phone number (area code plus phone number equals 10 digits).

I guess some people with poor vision or big fingers hit "9" instead of "0".  Or, they are at work or a hotel where "9" needs to be dialed to get an outside line, then hit "1-1" by mistake.  When FPD answers, they hang up.  FPD will attempt to contact the caller by phone, if not, they will send an officer out to see if an emergency exists.

Scary Home Invasion Last Night

A rare home invasion occurred last night in the neighborhood at the east end of Thornton Avenue near Paseo Padre.  A couple were home alone in their upstairs bedroom when an intruder slammed open their bedroom door.  The intruder, apparently startled to find someone home, quickly exited the house.  The occupants immediately called 9-1-1.  Numerous officers responded code 3 (lights and sirens).  The first officer arrived two minutes after being dispatched.  With the use of the canine, officers cleared the house quickly, finding no suspects.  However they did find evidence of forced entry on the side of the home.  From radio traffic it appears no one was injured.

Arrest at 7-Eleven on Sundale

The officer made it look easy.  According to radio traffic, a man steals some alcohol from the Food Maxx on Fremont Blvd and tells the manager on the way out that he would harm him if he tried to stop him.  He calls the PD.  An experience officer, after getting a good description of the guy, drives across the street to the 7-Eleven on Sundale.  Experience tells him  this might be one of the locals that hangs out there.  He finds the dude and puts him in cuffs.  Now they will take him back to Food Maxx for an I.D.  It will probably take longer to write up the report than it did to catch the guy.

Manhunt in Niles for Armed Carjacker

A man carjacked a Ford on Canyon Heights near Morrison Canyon Road around 6:30 this afternoon.  The suspect was armed with a silver pistol.  The vehicle fled north on Canyon Heights.  A few minutes later an officer located the vehicle on Niles Blvd by the train depot abandoned.  Numerous officers responded to the area in search of the man.  He was described as a hispanic male about 6 foot tall with a thin build.

Did Fremont Fire Blow The Crime Scene?

More facts have emerged about the assault in Niles Sunday night.  Fremont Police confirms that they were not notified of the event until nearly 12 hours later, at 8:05 a.m. Monday.  The 9-1-1 call  would have come in to the Fremont Police dispatch center on Stevenson Blvd.  FPD says the request was for medical aid for an unresponsive male.  They most likely transferred the call to the county fire dispatchers in Livermore.  Fremont Fire contracts with the county for dispatch services.  They in turn would have rung up station 2 in Niles.  The dispatch call came over the radio at 8:54 p.m. as a medical.  Had it been known or communicated that this was an assault victim, the radio call would have gone out as "respond for an assault victim" and would most likely have been told to "stage" away from the scene until police officers have secured the scene.  If the attack was brutal resulting in a grave condition, one would think this would be obvious to the medics on scene.  Why they did not call the police once they arrived on scene and observed the patient will be something that should be looked into.  Twelve hours is a long time for the suspect(s) and witnesses to disappear and for evidence to be destroyed.  FPD won't want to say negative things about allied agencies, but hopefully the truth will come out and the suspect will be caught.

Fremont Police Speak on Niles Assault

Here is info taken from the patrol blotter that just came across the wire:

#007 Suspicious Death Investigation
At 8:05 a.m. officers responded to the 37300 block of Niles Blvd to investigate a battery that occurred the night before.  On Sunday evening, the night prior, Fremont Fire responded to the patio area of a coffee shop on Niles Blvd., where they provided medical treatment to an unresponsive male.  The man was transported to a trauma center.  At the time of the call, it was only reported as medical in nature and there was no further information regarding the man’s injuries.  The following morning, the department was notified that the man’s condition was grave and he was suffering from major injuries.  Additional information was learned that the man may have been inolved in a fight.  Since that time, officers and detectives have been working the case trying to determine what occurred. As of Wednesday, the man remained hospital, but had been declared deceased by doctors. This remains a very active investigation.

Traffic Enforcement Saturation in Union City

Numerous officers, some from out of the area, are making traffic stops in U.C. this morning.  They are operating on a separate radio channel with a dedicated dispatcher.  This operation is known as HITT (High Impact Traffic Team).

Auto Burglary in Warm Springs

At least one vehicle was broken into in the Denny's parking lot in Warm Springs.  Suspect vehicle is a Range Rover with bogus license plates on it.

Photos From Vicinity of Homicide Scene

Fremont Fire station 2 paramedics were dispatched to DeVout Coffee Sunday night for a medical call.  They are literally less than a block away.  The Crime Reports web site shows an icon to the rear of Devout indicating a homicide had occurred there.  Is this an accurate location pin or a general area pin?  The pictures below are of the alley way (Iron Horse Lane) behind DeVout Coffee.

**Fremont Police confirms the location of assault as the patio area of Devout coffee, which is the area behind the garbage cans.

Oh Where, Oh Where Has Geneva Bosques Gone?

She will answer your email.  She will answer your tweets.  She has a B.A. from Cal State Hayward and an M.A. from St. Mary's.  She is the Public Affairs Manager/PIO at Fremont Police.  According to TranparentCalifornia, in 2017 her total pay was $132,816.  She is a talented employee who has mastered social media.  Yet, when a homicide goes down in a small closely knit district, such as Niles, she is unable to over rule the detectives' insistence on silence.  I am giving her the benefit of the doubt here.  I'm assuming she wants to crank out social media posts but isn't allowed to do so.  Why a simple "We are investigating a homicide that occurred late Sunday night in Niles" is forbidden is beyond me.  Oakland PD would have had this out days ago.  But then again, this is an almost daily occurrence in Oakland.  If FPD isn't going to use her talents, let her move on to the private sector and give us back our $132,816.

Homicide in Niles Confirmed

According to the online site Crime Reports, which is fed by data from Fremont PD, a homicide occurred on Niles Blvd.  They have the day/time as Monday May 20th at 8:00 a.m.  Perhaps this is the time that the assault victim died.  As we approach the 3 day mark from when this event occurred, we wonder how much longer must we wait until we hear from Fremont Police on this.  Their silence is deafening.

Career Robber

Large Group Gathering at American High

A large group of students has gathered outside of American High this afternoon causing concern to citizens and law enforcement officers.  Fremont Police officers were sent there around 3 this afternoon to assist the school resource officer.   The band of teens drifted down Alder towards the park where fights were threatened.  As of this writing there were no fights or injuries, but at least one report of threats to a teen.  Numerous officers are in the area.  Officers will use a PA to order kids to disperse from the high school parking lot.

Kid's iPhone Stolen at Centerville Jr. High

A Centerville Junior High student had his cell phone taken by four older teens around 2:30 this afternoon.  His brother called police to report the incident which occurred at the school.  Numerous officers are in the area.  With the "Find My iPhone" app reported to be available, the officers hope to track the phone and suspects.

MURDER AT THE FLORENCE ??

The rumor running around Niles is that a man was assaulted at the Florence Sunday night, transported to a trauma center and passed away.  Fremont PD has remained silent on this.  I'm not sure why we as taxpayers are paying for a full time Public Information Officer when she is unwilling or unable to inform the public of serious events happening in our town.  Here is what we know:

Fact: (from radio traffic)-  Engine 52 responded to the area of the Florence at 8:54 Sunday night, for a 39 year old male, unconscious and breathing.  Paramedic Plus unit 4212 was dispatched code 3 and advised by the fire captain that the patient had a head injury.  Ambulance arrived at 9:04.   A firefighter was transported with the ambulance to Eden Hospital.  The fire captain requested permission from the battalion chief at about 9:12 to drive to Eden to pick up the firefighter, which was granted.  I did not hear a request for Fremont PD to be dispatched to the scene.  Fremont PD detectives were at Eden Hospital early Monday afternoon.
Fact: (observed) - Police vehicles and crime scene tape were observed in front of the Florence around noon Monday.

Rumor:  Assault victim's name Thad, a patron of the Florence, who lived upstairs.
Rumor:  The victim died at Eden Hospital.
Rumor:  The Florence is full of dueling biker gangs that the new owner cannot control.

So this is what happens when facts are not brought out early by your local police department:  rumors fly.  The PIO will say the detectives don't want any info released as it will jeopardize the investigation.  They always say that.  The new Chief touts "transparency" but then keeps crime info hidden from the public.  I think 36 hours after a crime is way too long to have to wait.  For a city of 200,000 +, we deserve a better flow of information.

Fun Fremont Fact

The former GM assembly plant, now owned by Tesla, was opened in 1962.  Here is a brief item about it from Wikipedia:

Fremont Assembly was a General Motors automobile factory in Fremont, California. Groundbreaking for the plant occurred in September 1961.[1] It was the new site for production in the San Francisco area in 1962 when production moved from the older Oakland Assembly. Production continued through March 1 of 1982 when the plant was closed after production problems. Partially demolished (south end and water tower), the remaining plant was refurbished as the more successful NUMMI joint-venture with Toyota in 1984[2] and later became the Tesla FactoryTesla Motors' automobile plant in 2010.

They produced over 1,000 cars a day which I believe NUMMI did as well.  Tesla hopes to reach that production rate in the future.

Notice how bad the air quality was in this 1972 photo.  This changed in the late 70s with the advent of catalytic converters and the required unleaded fuel.  This really did clean up the Bay Area air.

Auto Burglars Arrested

Two men suspected of burglarizing an auto in a shopping center in Fremont were stopped by two Newark PD detectives on Washington at the Quick Stop around 7 this evening.  Apparently the detectives observed the suspects burglarize a car in a shopping center on Stevenson and then followed the vehicle until Fremont Police officers could get behind it and put a stop on it.  According to radio traffic this white Chrysler 300 has been wanted for other burglaries in the Bay Area.

FIRE AT TESLA

A report of boxes marked as "haz mat" are on fire, apparently to the rear of the Tesla plant.  This has been dispatched as a level 2 haz mat incident.  This is the same location that they have been to before.
Update:  Looks like a 4' x 6' battery bay of lithium ion batteries on fire.  They have knock down on the flames, but will need to submerge the burned area in water.  They plan to use a forklift to move this battery bay to a metal container and submerge it in water.  This is what has been done here in the past.  Two engines and a truck are on scene and two more engines are en route.

New Dispatch Feature

Fremont Police dispatch now has available a "busy tone" that can be used on the dispatch channel when the channel is restricted for emergency transmissions only.  I heard it for the first time around 7 this evening during a high risk traffic stop.  CHP and many other departments have been using that feature for years.  So, when you hear "980 on the Main" you can expect to hear the busy signal being broadcast.

Sea Quake beer, handcrafted in Crescent City using water from the Smith River.  A fine beverage to drink while listening to police calls at home.

Sideshow Activity

Both Fremont and Newark dispatchers have received calls of reckless drivers in the Ardenwood and Dumbarton Circle area.  Officers are on the way.  Must be Sunday afternoon....

Bombers Flying Over Fremont

They are old, but look to the skies this week as the Collins Foundation's WW2 bombers make an appearance at Moffett Federal Airfield.  The low rumble of old prop engines could be heard this morning and a glance up in the skies found a B-17 headed SW towards Moffett.  Also flying around are a B24 and B25.
Here is a link to their website: https://www.collingsfoundation.org/event/mountain-view-moffett-federal-airfield/

Shots Fired Near Logan High

UCPD officers responded to a large house party on H Street near Logan High around 1 this morning after a report of shots fired.  Officers arrived within minutes and learned that a male shot from a moving vehicle at the party house and fled.  Initial report was no one was injured.  Several shell casings were found in the street.  A few minutes after the officers arrived, an ll-99 (Officer Needs Help) was put out.  Fremont Police dispatched several officers code 3 to assist.  CHP offered their helo if needed.  A UCPD officer said he had 20 people detained.  After the situation stabilized, a "protective search" of the backyard was conducted.  As of this writing it is unknown if there were any injuries or arrests.

Photo of the Day

Fairly quiet early on this mid May Friday night at the Washington Township Hospital ER.  In fact there are more police cars  than ambulances.

Police Activity in Warm Springs *Updated*

Several officers are out on Mission Boulevard near warm Springs. At one point they had a subject at gun point. They are having a paramedic stage. The suspect vehicle is reported to be north out on Warm Springs Boulevard. Not certain of the crime. However a gun was observed.
Update FPD officers now have the Mercedes stopped across from Walmart and have found a pellet gun in the car. Also a knife has been located at the scene in the shopping center.

Update- listening to the archives, the call came out at 4:33 as a fight between 3 subjects in front of the Fremont Bank.  Then a report of a subject with a stick and more people getting involved.  Someone may have a hammer.  More officers are dispatched.  Now someone has a handgun.  First officer arrives two minutes later and holds one person at gunpoint.  He then asks for an ambulance to be called but stage until scene is secure- have one subject with a stab wound.  An involved vehicle has 4-5 occupants and the sergeant will wait for more officers to arrive before having occupants exit vehicle.  One involved vehicle, the white Mercedes, fled north on Warm Springs and was stopped, as mentioned above.  In the end, how many people, if any, were arrested and what charges are unknown.

Baseball Bat Assault near Alder & Nicolet

Numerous officers are in the area of Nicolet and Alder checking a residence.  A drone is also in use.  A man in his mid 20s struck another subject in the elbow with a baseball bat.  Listening to the hospital channel,  a male was being transported with an arm injury from a baseball bat strike.  "No deformity" was noted by the paramedic.  More info...apparently the two involved here are roommates.

Update on Hayward's Monday Shooting

Attached is a link to the EBT story about the shooting on Monday.  It took Hayward three days to release the info, but now we know officers shot at home invasion suspects as they left the victim's home.  In the news story, the writer says this occurred in the Fairview District.  This in incorrect- it occurred in west Hayward.  The shooting in Fairview was investigated by sheriff's deputies as it lays outside of the city of Hayward.   Two people were shot and injured in that event.

Another Crazy Person in Fight With Cops

Several people reported a woman walking north on Fremont Blvd in the traffic lanes.  An officer located her between Country and Eggers.  A third unit was called in to help and the woman could be heard screaming in the background.  She was safely detained moments later.  How long is this going to go on?  When will the city do something to remove the mentally ill from the streets?

Update on Oakland Sweep This Morning

Here is a news story from the EBT describing this mornings busts in the East Bay-

https://www.eastbaytimes.com/2019/05/16/sixteen-arrested-in-oakland-warrant-sweep/

Man in Road With Pants Down

Good morning Fremont!  If you are driving around Deep Creek and Alvarado watch out for a man standing in the road with his sweat pants down.  Several people have called into dispatch about this ugly sight to behold, especially before the morning coffee kicks in (or maybe its better that way).

Auto Burglaries at Starbucks

At least two vehicles were quickly broken into this morning at the Starbucks in Brookvale.  Suspect vehicle a newer Honda with dealer paper plates.

East Bay Busts This Morning

Authorities are conducting search operations at at least five locations in the East Baythis morning. Cities include Oakland, Alameda and Hayward and possibly others.   Ambulances are being staged at each location as this appears to be a high risk operation.  Perhaps this operation is a result of gun violence in the East Bay this past week.

Sheriff's Deputy Arrested for DUI

This occurred last week in Livermore.  Here is the story from NBC Bay Area:

Carjacked Vehicle Stopped; Suspects Arrested

Fremont Police officers stopped a vehicle that had been carjacked and arrested the two occupants around 4:40 this afternoon.  An officer observed the vehicle on Thornton and followed it north on 880.  After activating the lights, the vehicle yielded to the center divider against the sound wall.  The occupants held their hands up out the windows.  Traffic north of 880 was halted until the suspects were safely taken into custody.  It is unknown if this is the vehicle jacked last night on Thornton.
Update:  the vehicle stopped was a blue 2013 Toyota Corolla, so it sounds like a match with last night's vehicle.  It did not make it very far...

POLICE PATROL BLOTTER IS ALIVE !

After a month long absence the Fremont Police Patrol Blotter has returned with a week long edition highlighting activity from May 8-14.  Welcome back!

Car Jacking on Thornton

A man just dialed 9-1-1 to report his blue Toyota Corolla was just jacked by a man with a gun.  Officers are on the way.  This went down on Thornton at Cabrillo.

Rescue of Man on RR Tracks West of Pac Commons

There is a man on the railroad tracks with his bicycle that is trapped by water on both sides of him per a person calling 9-1-1 a few minutes ago.  Officers are now moving into the area to try and locate the subject who apparently is south of Auto Mall.  A man did observe and talk to the man on the tracks and is now driving back to the city area to talk to officers.  Union Pacific RR has been advised to stop all trains.
Update:  Officers have just launched a drone in hopes of finding the man on the tracks.
At 10:10 officers completed search and did not locate subject.

Update On Courthouse Escape; Still On The Loose

Here is the story from the EBT:

24 Hour Fitness Autos Hit

Burglars hit vehicles parked at the 24 Hour Fitness in Milpitas and Newark this morning.  The suspect vehicle appeared to be the same car but with license plates switched out.

Canales Was Not Wearing A Seat Belt

The Washington High student killed in a head-on crash on highway 17 over the weekend was not wearing a seat belt.  Armando Canales was a passenger in a vehicle struck head on by a drunk driver just after 2 a.m.  Four other people were in the car and two of those did not have belts on as well.  Only Canales was killed but three of the other four went to the hospital.  SR 17 is a dangerous highway in the best of times, but on a dark night with bars closing it is a lethal trap.  Had they postponed their trip until daylight and he had his seat belt on, he would be alive today.  Hopefully this is a teaching moment at WHS.  Wear your seatbelt.  Drive defensively.

Escape From Courthouse

Fremont officers are searching for a man who escaped custody of Sheriff’s deputies at the Fremont courthouse shortly after 4 this afternoon.

More Shots Fired In Hayward; Gang Warfare??

Shots were fired in the neighborhood west of 880 and north of  Industrial in the city of Hayward around 3 this afternoon.  Suspect vehicle is a black Honda sedan that fled the area.  East bay police departments are on the alert for this vehicle.  This is at least the 2nd time shots have been fired in or near the city of Hayward in the last two days.  If this is gang warfare, we can expect more in the coming days.
Update:  A command post has been set up.  One parked vehicle has been struck and possibly one garage door.   Unknown if any persons have been hit but radio traffic doesn't indicate such at this time.

Boise Kind

Watch this video of good people helping out a stalled motorist in Boise and let me know if this would happen in Fremont.  First, our fellow citizens would have to get their head out of their phone to even notice the stalled car.  Then they would accelerate to the next traffic light without a blink...

Not so busy here...

Fremont Assists Hayward Once Again

Fremont officers were dispatched into Hayward last night, at least the second time this weekend.  Hayward officers had stopped a stolen vehicle occupied by 3 people.  The suspect vehicle attempted to hit the police vehicle or officer before the occupants fled.  One was detained, but two escaped.  HPD requested the Fremont drone.  Two patrol officers, one of which was a K-9 unit, plus a sergeant responded to the Whitman St. location.
On the one hand it seems unfair to be sending our assets into another city, especially one that does not border Fremont.  However, on the other hand, the people HPD has stopped or are looking for, may possibly be responsible for crimes here in Fremont, or will be committing crimes here in the future.  So, perhaps any effort to suppress regional crime is a good thing.

The 2015 Shooting of a Mentally Ill Man

Reviewing documents from a January, 2015 Officer Involved Shooting, I found an interesting paragraph.  "Family members believed Shinwary had been suffering from an unknown (and undiagnosed) mental disorder and had also been known to use methamphetamines. Family members attempted to help Shinwary numerous times over the years, and he would not accept their assistance."

All too often the mentally ill are brought in for an evaluation, given meds to stabilize their condition and released to the streets.  And all too often they don't take their meds and act out.  On January 16th, 2015, a man died after charging a police officer with a knife.  And last month a mentally ill man shot at a passing police car and was in turn killed.  There must be some way to keep the mentally ill off the streets if they cannot care for themselves.

Shooting Outside of Hayward Last Night

CHP officers were alerted by their dispatcher around 11:30 last night of a report of 9 shots being fired in the Fairview area of Hayward.  Sheriff's deputies were en route.  The deputies stopped a Chrysler 300 off of Second Street.  There apparently was one gun shot victim that was taken to a local hospital with a Hayward Police escort.  Deputies advised there were about 15 people being uncooperative in the area.  They believe the shooter was on foot and requested CHP shut down Second Street near the top in Fairview at Vista Green.  6 CHP officers responded.  Unknown if this is related to the earlier incident off of Tennyson in the City of Hayward.

Bruce Is Back

A MET officer is on the way to the Ardenwood area to check on a disturbance involving our friend Bruce.  Many resources have been spent on this individual and I'm sure there are many more repeat offenders here in Fremont.

Fun Fremont Facts

The Fremont Dragstrip opened 60 years ago in 1959 with two freshly paved 3/4 mile strips located in what is now Pacific Commons.  From LocalWiki.Org: "In the late 1950′s, Fremont’s own Ron Lawrence  with support of local Washington High School's auto shop teacher Vern Eichner "...partnered  with several local area individuals to propose the construction of a quarter mile dragstrip that would be located off Durham Road next to the Fremont Sky-Sailing Airport and West of the Nimitz Freeway. Interest in the sport was soaring,"1 the car culture of the 50's needed a place to let there speed out and "...despite the presence of other tracks in the area, including Half Moon Bay, Cotati, Vacaville, and Lodi, another track would be a warm welcome to the infantile but fledgling sport..."1 and to a new city as Fremont was incorporated in 1956.
"As with any racing venue, receiving the permits for the project was a struggle for Lawrence and company, but once finalized, two perfectly straight paved roads measuring 3/4 of a mile long appeared on the site of an abandoned air field that served as an auxiliary landing strip for nearby Moffett Naval Air Station during World War II..  ".

The strip folded in 1988 and the land was later developed into the Pacific Commons shopping area.  As one former drag enthusiasts said "We may have lost the drag strip but at least we got an In and Out Burger!"

Fun Fremont Fact

Kristi Yamaguchi graduated from Mission San Jose High almost 30 years ago at age 17.  She was home schooled for her first two years of high school to accommodate her skating schedule.  The Chicago Tribune had this to say about her in 1989:  "Yamaguchi, 17, of Fremont, Calif., became the first U.S. woman since Margaret Graham in 1953 to win more than one medal in the U.S. National Figure Skating Championships."
Kristi funded the Alway Dream PlayPark located on the Stevenson Blvd side of Central Park.
