The 2015 Shooting of a Mentally Ill Man

Reviewing documents from a January, 2015 Officer Involved Shooting, I found an interesting paragraph.  "Family members believed Shinwary had been suffering from an unknown (and undiagnosed) mental disorder and had also been known to use methamphetamines. Family members attempted to help Shinwary numerous times over the years, and he would not accept their assistance."

All too often the mentally ill are brought in for an evaluation, given meds to stabilize their condition and released to the streets.  And all too often they don't take their meds and act out.  On January 16th, 2015, a man died after charging a police officer with a knife.  And last month a mentally ill man shot at a passing police car and was in turn killed.  There must be some way to keep the mentally ill off the streets if they cannot care for themselves.

  1. Yes I agree. A safe community needs to be built for them so they can have some independence and have a low level security but still contained for their safety. I think I explained that correctly?
