Former FPD school resource officer and present city council member Rick Jones voted against outlawing flavored tobacco sales at a recent city council meeting. As SRO at Washington High for a number of years he must have seen what tobacco can do to kids, but voted to support the businessmen instead, the Merchants of Death, here in Fremont. He was joined by council members Salwan and Keng. While the age to purchase tobacco in California is 21, many local high school students say it is easy to obtain these products and the flavored tobacco makes smoking an easy habit to start, especially vaping. This is a growing health issue here in Fremont and the City Council can make a difference. But it takes courage and backbone.
