Car Talk Puzzler

Since this is somewhat law enforcement related, I'll post this puzzler for your consumption.  The answer will not be out until next Monday.  So far, the answer is not obvious to me.

The High-Speed Chase

RAY: This puzzler was submitted by Chuck Leyderer, who writes:

Sergeant O'Malley and his rookie assistant Ned are just pulling out of the local donut shop. They get a call on the radio that the town north of them has had a bank robbery. The suspects are proceeding south, and it's a high-speed chase.

The chase has been going on for 40 minutes, and the radio says O'Malley and Ned should be on the lookout for a yellow Mustang with two men in the front seat and a woman in the back.

Just at that moment, they happen to see a yellow Mustang with two guys in the front and a woman in the back. Sargent O'Malley says, "That's the car, Ned! Flip on the siren, and let's get 'em!"

Ned, who's been studying the back of the car, says, "I don't think so, Sarge. It's not them."

What did Ned see?

  1. Did he see that the exhaust was dripping instead of smoky?

  2. That would indicate the car hadn't been running long

  3. Ding ding ding. We did look up the answer on the internet, and that is CORRECT. Moisture was coming from the exhaust pipe. Good job Carla!

  4. Hmmmm. About 50 years ago, I bought my first car, an Austin Mini. After a year or so it started dripping water from the exhaust, even after an extensive drive.

I ultimately diagnosed a blown head gasket and replaced it myself (something for which I remain quite proud).

So, Ned might have let the real crooks get away :-(
