Dangerous Lunchtime Pursuit

This is the third week in a row that Fremont officers were engaged in questionable high speed pursuits through busy streets of Fremont.  Today's near disaster started at The Hub where unit 1X9 observed a stolen vehicle moving through the parking lot shortly after 11:30 a.m.  As another officer approached the area, the stolen blue 2016 BMW 328 was lit up and then fled.  The chase started out east on Mowry and then south on Civic Center, passing both Washington and Kaiser hospitals at lunchtime when employees are frequently out on foot.  A speed of 55 was reported approaching Stevenson, shortly after going through the red light at Walnut.  East on Stevenson they went accelerating up to 90 prior to Mission.  I might add that they blew the red light at Gallaudet where the California School for the Deaf and Blind is located.  As the vehicle again sped up to 90 in moderate traffic while heading north on Mission from Stevenson, the sergeant, S21, called off the pursuit.  Again, this could have ended in tragedy.  An elderly person in a wheelchair crossing Civic Center?  A van with kids in it crossing Civic Center on Walnut?  A mom pushing a child in a stroller crossing Stevenson by the library?  All of this risk for someone that is driving a stolen car.

  1. That’s crazy. I had received a call asking me what was going on because of all the sirens but I wasn’t able to check. Thanks for posting this but you’re right extremely dangerous for sure. With the huge corners and the big unnecessary raised bike path, no one would be able to get out of the way. Dangerous for sure. When it rained the other day it caused a lake. 🤦‍♀️🙄

  2. Yes the pursuits are getting out of hand. We happened to catch the tail end of this one on Stevenson by the tennis courts. I didn't mention it in the story, but they blew the red at Mission and Stevenson...huge busy intersection and then crossed Walnut at 90!

  3. Wow, that is insane. Someone is going to get seriously injured or killed like in Newark a few months back.

  4. That Newark crash always comes to mind. Some of these escaping felons could care less if they crash and hurt themselves or others. Several years ago there was a fatal pursuit that killed a Fremont doctor's husband. Scary stuff.
