A staff person at Fremont Hills, an assisted living facility on Mission Blvd near King, called 9-1-1 around 4:43 this morning, according to radio traffic. A man was face down on his bed, bleeding and not breathing. Fremont Fire paramedics were on the way and police officers were dispatched as well. The shocking part of this story is that there is no AED (Automated External Defibrillator) in the facility AND apparently the staff person does not know CPR as the caller was transferred over to ACFD dispatchers for CPR instructions. The other shocking part is that none of this is apparently required at assisted living facilities. These are not nursing homes with more stringent government oversight. In fact, at Fremont Hills, they advertise a "caring, trained staff available 24 hours per day", but no nurse or other medically qualified employees. While it is hard to know that if a trained nurse was on duty if this man could have been saved, it is disappointing to know that no AED nor trained staff to use it or to provide CPR, was employed. Fremont Hills may be a great place to live and is in legal compliance, but buyer beware: assisted living facilities will assist mainly in cooking and housekeeping...they are NOT a nursing facility. Good read here about these types of facilities:

That is very sad. One should never assume there is medical staff on hand. The worst part is no AED or CPR trained staff.
