Thank you for your patience as we’ve continued to monitor the Coronavirus situation in the Bay Area. While there are still no reported cases in Alameda County (click herefor latest update from Alameda County Department of Public Health (español | 中文), as a precaution, Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) will implement the policies listed below in the interest of student and staff safety.
As part of an emergency declaration, Americans returning to the United States, who have been in China’s Hubei province within the past 14 days, will face a mandatory quarantine and be monitored by public health officials. There are currently no FUSD students or family members under mandatory quarantine at this time.
Americans returning to the United States from other parts of China will face enhanced screening upon re-entry to the country and a self-quarantine of up to 14 days to ensure they do not pose a health risk.
Mandatory Quarantine:
- FUSD will be notified by the Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD) of any students under mandatory quarantine.
- Once FUSD has received notification these individuals are cleared to return to campus, schools will communicate with affected families to arrange re-entry.
- Schools will work with students to support continued learning at home.
- Related absences will be excused.
Self Quarantine:
- Students who have recently returned, or have contact with a person returning from China, are asked to voluntarily self-quarantine for fourteen days.
- Schools will work with students to support continued learning at home.
- Related absences will be excused.
Please know that the District is committed to maintaining the privacy of our students. Our schools will work with students and families under mandatory or self-quarantine with sensitivity and confidentiality.
FUSD understands that missing school, for any reason, can cause concern and stress for our families and students. We will work collaboratively with families throughout this process. These guidelines have been put into place to maintain a healthy and safe environment for all families. In addition, we ask parents, caregivers or others, who may be under mandatory or self-quarantine to remain off campus as well. We also encourage the support of friends and neighbors of children under quarantine so they feel safe and accepted when they return to school.
At this time, public health officials say there is no need to wear facemasks in the United States. However, as a precaution, students are allowed to wear facemasks on all FUSD campuses, if desired. Please note that anyone seen wearing a mask as a precaution does not mean that person is sick or exposed.
FUSD staff will continue to closely monitor this situation, which is evolving as countries and expert health agencies learn more about the Coronavirus. As we have updates, information and resources from the Alameda County Department of Public Health or other agencies, the District will provide them to our community.
We recommend the same simple steps that prevent the spread of any illness to prevent possible exposure to the Coronavirus:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
- Cough into a tissue or your elbow (not your hand). Then throw the tissue away and wash your hands.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick
- Keep students home if temperature is above 100.0 F (38.7 C) or they report not feeling well, appear weak or ill
- Consult your health care provider if you or your child has special health conditions that put you at increased risk
Throughout this process, students attending school will not be excluded from any school activities due to race or country of origin. I thank you in advance for your cooperation as we work together to keep our community healthy and safe.
