Police Blotter Out 5 Weeks

We all love Kristy Yamaguchi and who wouldn't want to have their picture taken with her AND KTVU's Gasia Makaelian, but could maybe ONE of you put out a police blotter sometime soon. Just saying.

We were thrilled to be a part of segment here in Fremont this morning and having our hometown Olympian drop by to take part was really cool!

Science Experiment Sets Off Alarm at WHS

A science experiment in the new science building at Washington High School set off the smoke alarm just before noon today.  Apparently the smoke detectors in the new building were too sensitive. Fremont engine 56 did respond to the alarm call as the students evacuated their classrooms.   The disruption was short-lived as the source of the smoke was quickly learned.

ACE Starts Saturday Service

(STOCKTON, Calif.) – The San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission (SJRRC) is pleased to announce the launch of the NEW Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) Saturday Service beginning September 7, 2019. The ACE train service is a growing commuter rail service that serves passengers Monday through Friday with service from Stockton to San Jose with stops in Lathrop/Manteca, Tracy, Livermore, Pleasanton, Fremont, Great America, and Santa Clara. ACE Saturday Service is an exciting addition to transportation options for Saturday commuters and leisure travelers.

“ACE Saturday Service is something that the communities we serve have long desired, and we’re excited to offer this new service,” says Christina Fugazi, chair of SJRRC. “Our hope is that commuters and families get out of their cars on Saturdays and spend quality time relaxing while riding the train.”

For the current ACE rider, Saturday Service offers commuters the flexibility work on Saturday without the need to drive. For leisure travelers, the new service provides a safe and scenic ride to their destination. ACE Saturday Service will carry the same fare structure as the current ACE service. For ACE Monthly Pass Holders, Saturday Service will be an included day of travel at no additional cost. The Wheels bus service will operate on Saturdays from the Pleasanton Station to connect passengers to the Dublin BART Station. ACE passengers can utilize their tickets for free transfers to VTA services at Santa Clara and San Jose’s Diridon Station.

Another Innocent Party Killed in Police Chase; L.A. Area

I hope there is more to the story than just busting a stop sign.  Sometimes police know the driver and need an excuse to stop him.  But to chase a dude for a minor infraction is bogus.

Poorly Trained Dispatchers

I must vent.  Everybody knows where Target at the Hub is located.  Zone 1 officers must go there daily for one reason or another, yet almost all the dispatchers, especially the new ones, give the full address...wasting their time and the officers' time "415 at Target at the Hub.  39201 Fremont Blvd.  39201 Fremont Blvd.  Cross is Walnut."  So far nothing important to the officer in the field has been transmitted.  Then, finally "two males in a heated 415 in the parking lot on the Walnut side".  But...what I heard last night at Mission and Palm was very telling.  The dispatcher repeated what an officer said even if it didn't make any sense!  Chasing a suspect on foot towards Mission High, the officer incorrectly stated "going into Washington High".  The dispatcher, who should have been following along on her screen, or at least have a mental picture of the area, said "going into Washington Hospital" which made no sense.  She should have questioned the officer right there, asking him to repeat.  The officer then said again, incorrectly "Washington High", which she repeated "Washington High".  Finally another officer blurted "Mission High".  I'm sure there was no doubt in this scenario which high school it was to the officers on the call, but it was disappointing that the dispatcher had no clue of the area and just repeated what she heard.  I think this is the result of computer aided dispatching, where the dispatcher reads a screen and is not totally involved in the call.

Wednesday Afternoon Calls

...all of the following within the last half hour...UPS driver reports a man with 3 back packs walking up to cars at State and Capitol and kicking them...the manager at Cloverleaf Bowl reported two transients, one male, one female causing a disturbance on the Bay Street side parking area...two motorists collided on the north end of Fremont Blvd and one refuses to talk to the other....an apparent suicide attempt by an older woman in zone two (conscious and breathing)...at a restaurant at Fremont and Mowry, a transient threw a ketchup bottle at a customer and he is now outside eating out of the garbage can.  The manager is locking the doors..

Foot Chase at Mission High Last Night

Around 10:30 last night an officer stumbled upon a disabled vehicle blocking Mission Blvd and Palm, in front of Mission High.  The vehicle turned out to be stolen.  The driver took off on foot running south on Mission with the officer following on foot as well.  The suspect then turned around north while weaving in/out of traffic.  He finally ran onto the Mission High campus where he was apprehended.  An ambulance was called for the suspect.

Not all transients are felons or even criminals, but some are really bad.  This "Fremont Transient", as listed on the booking info, was arrested by Pleasanton Police over the weekend.  This is not a dude you want to challenge over a small issue.

Innocent Person Killed After Sunnyvale PD Attempts to Stop Stolen Honda

Sunnyvale did not release too many details.  What is the distance from the parking lot to where the crash occurred?  When exactly did the crash occur, not when the officer found it.  This sounds similar to the fatal Fremont was involved in last month.  If a criminal "thinks" the cops are nearby chasing him, he will drive crazy and often injury or death occurs.  Maybe a better option would be to print the car, tow it, and get a warrant later.

Fights Break Out at 2 A.M. !

On J St. in Niles a man was down from a fight.  At the Saddle Rack, a drunk customer was unconscious and on the floor after being beaten.  Officers were rolling code 3 north and south just before bar closing time, 2 a.m.  In Niles, one driving through in the late afternoon could not help but sense a festive atmosphere.  There were yard sales, parties, music, dancing.  The annual Antique Faire would start before sunrise. You had a feeling it could get ugly after dark.  Just before 2 a.m. 6-7 car loads of males began fighting in front of an antique store on Niles near J.  One man was down with at least moderate injuries to his hands and wrists.  Paramedics were called.  A suspect armed with a knife fled on foot south on J.  By the time officers arrived, all participants had fled, less the man down.
At the Saddle Rack, security broke up a fight just before 2 a.m.  One man was down and unconscious.  He was drunk.  The other involved party was still there too.  Paramedics were called in.

Tesla Stolen From Factory; Arrest Made

This is one of the weirdest things I have heard on the scanner over the years.  A brand new Tesla Model X, valued at around $100K, is taken from the factory, "likely by an employee", and driven to East Palo Alto.  The vehicle was in the factory lot awaiting delivery to the customer.  Tesla security agents, using GPS tracking, followed the vehicle from East Palo Alto, across the Dumbarton into U.C.  From there the stolen black Tesla made it into the Deep Creek Road area of north Fremont, where FPD was called in to assist at about 10:45 a.m.  Tesla security located the vehicle unoccupied off of Deep Creek and FPD detectives rolled in.  The Tesla people did see the driver exit the Model X and provided detectives with a description.   While unmarked cars roamed the area, a Lyft vehicle picks up two men nearby and heads out on Paseo Padre towards the Dumbarton.  An alert detective sees this and radios for other units to stop it.  A stop is made on Paseo at Kaiser at 11:10 a.m. The Lyft driver says they are en route to East Palo Alto.  The passengers are pulled out and one is positively identified by Tesla employees as the driver.  Total time to arrest the suspect from first call:
30 minutes.

LAPD Writing up Scooters

Interesting story from the LA Times which could be applied to Fremont.  The scooters are coming, but bicycles are here now.  Here is the blurb from Fremont's web site:

Shared Active Transportation Program

Shared Active Transportation programs consist of bicycles, electric bicycles, and motorized scooters that are deployed in the public right-of-way for use by members, customers, or the general public. Shared Active Transportation programs provide a convenient, sustainable, and congestion-reducing option for short-trips and accessing transit.
The City is partnering with Hopr, to bring a shared active transportation program to Fremont for a one-year pilot program. The pilot will initially consist of 250 “dockless” bikes and may be expanded to include additional bikes or scooters. The pilot program will begin in late August 2019.

100 MPH Pursuit Up Fremont Blvd !!

This is beginning to be a daily occurrence.  One of the license plate readers (LPR hit) picks up a felony vehicle, a broadcast is made to the officers in the field, it is spotted and a pursuit entails.  Around 11:42 last night there was an LPR hit on a 96 Honda Accord going north on Fremont Blvd at Mowry.   A patrol officer picked it up on Fremont at Central by Holy Spirit Church.  The vehicle took off, continuing north on Fremont at speeds of up to 100 mph.  The officer lost the vehicle as it crested 880, but another officer found it unoccupied on Alvarado near Lake Arrowhead.  A perimeter was set up, with UCPD assisting as well as a drone and dog unit.  But by 12:37 the suspect had not been located and officers resumed normal patrol.

Bust at Wendy's

Four people in a stolen auto made the mistake of pulling into Wendy's on Blacow off Mowry for a bite to eat this afternoon.  A street crimes officer, apparently working auto burglaries in the area, spotted a stolen 2018 silver Ford Fiesta near Massimo's but lost it in the parking lot.  A number of unmarked vehicles cruised the area.  Around 2:30 the vehicle was located at Wendy's and was unoccupied.  Plain clothes officers noticed four people inside, with  two matching the description of occupants of the vehicle, and two females.  The rear windows were blacked out, but most likely occupied by two females.  The four were arrested without incident as they exited the fast food restaurant.  The vehicle, according the radio traffic, was also suspected of being used for auto burglaries.

$2,000 Theft

I missed the location, but the suspect took $2000 in items, got into the passenger seat of a vehicle and was last seen southbound on Fremont Blvd.  Officers are en route and I will update as more info comes in.

Redding Police Find Stolen Donut Truck!!

Reposted from RPD Facebook page:
Redding Police Department

Officers Sniffed Out a Stolen Donut Truck.
Earlier this morning, Officers located a stolen donut truck parked in a parking lot at Oregon Street and Tehama Street. When Officers looked inside, what they found broke their hearts: over 100 discarded donuts without a home. Yes, it’s true, we as Officers do have a sweet spot in our hearts for donuts 🍩. I mean, who doesn’t love donuts 🤷🏻‍♂️
Officers conducted an extensive search of the area but could not locate anyone involved in this tragic incident. The Officers were heartbroken that all these donuts had to be thrown away.

Update on Morrison Canyon Burglary

Fremont Police have already announced the arrest of this man.  He is the one who was spotted on Vargas.  Apparently they could not tie him to the burglary, but he was arrested on a number of other charges.  I'm sure the detectives know his associates and they may seek a warrant or otherwise gather them up in the coming days.  It is interesting to note that they have him listed as a "transient", but he has a history of living in Fremont and apparently is not considered your typical "homeless" street guy.

Drunk Takes Out Signal at Mowry and Fremont

An apparent drunk driver drove a 2006 Dodge pick up truck into a traffic signal at Mowry and Fremont around 9:30 last night.  Nobody was injured in the solo vehicle crash, but an officer on scene believes the driver may have been drinking.  It is unknown if he was arrested.  The westbound lanes of Mowry were closed until around 6 this morning as a signal was dangling from above, creating a possible hazard for passing motorists.  A city crew was called out to repair the signal structure.

Man With a Knife Call on Fremont Blvd

A man running with a knife was apprehended by FPD officers on Fremont Blvd near Margery Drive around 4:45 this afternoon.  Officers contacted the subject shortly after being dispatched.  The man tossed the knife and officers were able to get him to prone out on the street.  A paramedic crew was called to stand by until the scene was secure.  Presently officers are waiting for a third unit to arrive before taking the subject into custody.
Update:  subject now in custody.

Pursuit of Stolen Car Last Night

One of Fremont's license plate readers (LPR) got a hit on a stolen gray 2018 Chevrolet Malibu in the Ardenwood area around 9:35 last night.  The vehicle was actually a rental car from San Jose that was not returned.  An alert officer located it 7 minutes later at the Jack in the Box on Ardenwood.  Officers followed it on to westbound 84 onto the Dumbarton Bridge where they activated the red light.  The vehicle fled from the across the bridge and then onto University Ave.  The four minute pursuit ended after the vehicle turned onto a dead end street and ran through a chain link fence, apparently disabling the car.  In the end,  with the assist of Menlo Park Police,  3 suspects were taken into custody from the vehicle.

Channel Marker

I heard the FPD dispatcher say she will now activate the "Channel Marker", and the beep activated.  So I did a little research, and found this:

The Channel Marker feature allows you to send a tone across a particular talkgroup which will occur every 10 seconds until terminated. The marker indicates that the talkgroup is restricted to emergency traffic only.

Activating the Channel Marker

To initiate the channel marker, click the button on the desired talkgroup.  It will turn red and you will see the transmit icon appear on the resource while the tone is being sent.

Burglary up Morrison Canyon

A homeowner up near the top of Morrison Canyon Road interrupted some burglars around 7:15 this morning and called police after chasing them down the driveway.  Two fled and a third is possibly still in the residence.  The two that fled had a small dog with them and left in a silver truck with a cover over the bed.  Officers are searching the residence now for a possible third suspect.  A drone has been called in to assist.
Update:  A suspect may be on Vargas walking towards 680 per a resident in the area.  Officers are enroute.
Update at 8:40: Several residents are calling in to report a suspicious person in the area on Vargas.  A number of officers and the drone are working the area.
Update at 8:50:  A report of the suspect now on 680 in the center median between Sheridan and Vargas, but road workers in the area have not seen him.   Possibly a ruse.
UCPD has a canine unit rolling code 3 to Vargas to assist.
Update at 9:00  Officers have him at gun point near 680 Mission and the McDonalds in a creek bed.  Now have him in custody.  This is probably the 3rd suspect from the home burglary that was left behind by his buddies after the owner chased them down the driveway.  Wouldn't surprise me if he gives them up to the detectives.  He must be pissed.
