An officer has observed a subject shooting a handgun on Civic Center by Washington Hospital just before 10:50 this evening. It appears that the officer, unit 2A5, has shot the individual and he is down now on Civic Center. The suspect's weapon is underneath him, per radio traffic. Numerous officers are in the area. The armored vehicle is being called in for protection in order to take the suspect into custody. Suspect may still be alive. No motive given for shooting. No other shooters outstanding per radio traffic. No injuries to officers.
Update 11:06 pm. Scene is stable and paramedics now allowed to come in to treat suspect. Officers being sent into Washington West to make sure everything is ok.
Update 11:35 pm Union City Police will send officers into Fremont to handle emergency calls while Fremont officers help investigate this officer involved shooting (OIS). Numerous streets in the area of Walnut, Civic Center & Mowry are closed.
Glad the officer was not hurt.
