Fremont Firefighters were called to the parking lot of Lucky Market at the north end of Fremont Blvd (Charter Square) late last night to dispose of the very potent carfentanil drug. Earlier Fremont Police officers stopped a stolen vehicle in the parking lot and took at least two people into custody. Apparently in the vehicle were an unknown quantity of carfentanil and a mix of other narcotics. The initial engine dispatched immediately called for a level 2 hazardous material response. Carfentanil, according to a DEA bulletin, is 100 times more potent than fentanyl and 10,000 times more potent than morphine. Carfentanil is used as a tranquilizing agent for elephants and other large animals and a small amount of it can cause serious health issues to humans, per DEA guidance. Fremont Fire had two engine companies, a haz mat crew and two battalion chiefs responsd. They later asked for an ambulance to standby in case needed.
Update: FPD, in their police blotter issued Monday afternoon, stated the drug was not identified, but the driver of the vehicle said it was fentanyl.
Wow very scary for the first responders.
